Welcome to the Desert Rider Home Page

Greetings to everyone from the Great Plains, and welcome to the new home of Desertrider! We are Claudia and Michael, and we live in Nebraska. We would like to share some pictures and impressions from some of our trail rides in the deserts of the Southwest!
Desert Rides, in four-wheel drive...

This site reflects the fascination with the Southwestern Deserts that Claudia and I share. You'll find chronicles or short photo essays of some of our travels under the links of this page.

An old four-wheel drive 1985 GMC K5 Jimmy (with a few mods!) made all those beautiful places accessible. We've now expanded the Desertrider fleet by adding a 1972 Toyota Land Cruiser. You'll see it soon on the trails!

Let us know what you think by dropping us a line, or sign our guestbook!

We both enjoy the scenery and solitude of the desert tremendously - it gives us a chance to get distance from the daily grind and "recharge" mind and body. Great landscapes in the sun, dry and dusty but fragrant desert air, the stillness of a remote historic trail - and just sleep a few nights under the stars out there and see for yourself!

Our trips out in the deserts are, by necessity, 4-wheel drive adventures - you'll never know what lies ahead on unmaintained trails, or where the latest washout has occurred. We believe in staying on established trails, treading lightly, and frown upon literal "off-road" use of the desert, no matter what all the SUV/truck advertisements might suggest! We hope you'll enjoy Desertrider tales from a number of historic trails in Arizona and California, such as Mojave Road, Bradshaw trail, or El Camino del Diablo, my personal favorite. Rocks, Sand, Cactus, Heat ... check it out on our photo pages!

The Trucks...

Our trusted and preferred means of transportation is a 1985 full-size GMC K5 Jimmy. Keeping the truck near stock, with a few improvements for reliability and durability, such as dual batteries and an ARB air locker, has proven quite useful for, say, 1300 mile trips from San Diego up and around Death Valley and back.

The K5 has now undergone a bit of a transformation where we can safely take it on 4-rated trails in Moab... check out our BlazerBash adventures!

In addition, we now have a newcomer to the Desertrider fleet: a 1972 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40... check back soon for more adventures in the new ride!
