Location, location, location...

Maps on this page are intended to show the approximate location of some of our desert travel adventures. They are not necessarily to scale and definitively not to be used for navigation. We have very good experience using the DeLorme Atlas and Gazetteer for both Southern California and Arizona. For trips that lead far off the beaten path, we rely rather exclusively on Topo-maps published by the United States Geological Survey. Maybe one of these days we'll graduate to a GPS...

  Southern California

A rough map showing the boundaries of Southern California in black. Interstate highways are indicated as thick blue lines, and a few California State highways are shown for orientation. The red circles are approximate locations of some of our desert tours.

Number 2 refers to trail rides that can be viewed on the 'SoCal Trails' page. Trips to Font's Point and Arroyo Seco/Diablo Dropoff in the Anza Borrego Desert State Park as well as a ride on the Red Canyon Trail east of the Salton Sea are summarized on this page. If interested, obtain local information from the ABDSP Visitor Center. Red Canyon Trail is a "corridor" through BLM-managed wilderness that makes managed access possible - a great concept!

The Mojave Road, a historic trail through the Eastern Mojave National Preserve, is referred to by number 4. The usual rules apply: no driving off the trail, no fire wood collection or new fire rings; camp within 50 feet of the trail. An account of a trip on Mojave Road can be found on a new page - covers only two thirds of the way, though, since we ran out od time. Besides that, check out the funky false-color pics on the 'Links' or the "Guestbook' pages... Death Valley, of course is self-explanatory, with CA 127, 190, and 178 sketched in between Baker on I-15 and CA 395!

Southwestern and Central Arizona

This map depicts central Arizona with the Verde River flowing towards Phoenix and the southwestern corner of the state.

Number 1 refers to the tours on the Camino del Diablo, and photos can be seen on the 'Millennium Tour' page. This trail is located within the Barry M. Goldwater Air Force Range and the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge. Regulations and Permits are available from the United States Marine Corps in Yuma, AZ. If you're interested, check below or on the 'Links' page.

Number 3 shows the approximate location of Forest Road 18 in central Arizona, which can be reached via Bloody Basin Road from I-17, or from Seven Springs Road coming up from Carefree/Scottsdale in the South. Pictures and impressions are summarized on the "AZ Forest Road 18' page.
